Last week, the Baylor Bears came in at number one in the first edition of the 2013 SRS Ratings. But the Bears ranked #1 on the strength of blowouts against bad teams; how would Baylor fare against West Virginia, who upset Oklahoma State just one week ago?

Art Briles’ squad raced out to a 56-14 lead, eventually won 73-42, and have cemented themselves as the new cool kids in town. But that doesn’t mean Baylor remained atop the SRS ratings. No, after Florida State and Jameis Winston dismantled Maryland, the Seminoles now rank number one:

To cut off the Alabama fans, yes, your team dropped because you played the 121st FBS team last week. No, I don’t think that six teams are actually better than the Crimson Tide; but the SRS is simply more impressed with the body of work from other teams this season. That’s partly a function of a low-octane win against Colorado State and the simple fact that Alabama scheduled Georgia State. But with Kentucky and Arkansas on top the next two weeks, Alabama’s strength of schedule grade isn’t going to get much better anytime soon, so I wouldn’t expect the Crimson Tide to top the SRS ratings unless and until they stay undefeated through the LSU game on October 26th.

Which teams posted the best games of the week?

How bad is New Mexico State? They were blown out by a horrible New Mexico team, which is the worst performance by an FBS team this year. On the plus side, Florida State’s win over Maryland — tied for the worst loss ever by a ranked team — is now the best single game of the year. You can see the single-game SRS grades for each FBS in every game this season at this link, which is updated every Sunday afternoon.
