Jimmy Garoppolo is now 5-0 as a starter for the Patriots and 49ers. This, despite being an underdog in 3 of his first 5 starts:

In 2016, Trevor Siemian — no really, this was just over one year ago — won the first four starts of his career. Siemian lost his fifth start, which makes Garoppolo the first quarterback to begin his career with a 5-0 record since Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers star began his career 15-0 in the regular season (and 14-0 overall) before losing his first start. Garoppolo is now the 11th quarterback since 1950 to win his first five starts, joining Roethlisberger, Marc Bulger, Daunte Culpepper, Kurt Warner, Jeff Hostetler, Mike Tomczak, Dieter Brock, Mike Kruczek, Mike Livingston, and Daryle Lamonica.
Of course, Garoppolo did it with two teams, the Patriots (during Tom Brady‘s suspension) and the 49ers (after San Francisco moved on from Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard). Only Lamonica, who backed up Jack Kemp in Buffalo (and went 4-0 with the Bills before being traded to the Raiders), can match that.
How long did each quarterback go before losing a regular season game? Garoppolo will need to make it to 8 straight wins to have the fourth longest steak since 1950.
15 – Ben Roethlisberger
10 – Mike Tomczak
10 – Mike Livingston
7 – Daunte Culpepper
7 – Dieter Brock
7 – Daryle Lamonica
6 – Marc Bulger
6 – Kurt Warner
6 – Mike Kruczek
5 – Jeff Hostetler
Garoppolo has been pretty impressive statistically over the last two seasons, too. He’s averaging 8.58 yards per attempt and 8.87 ANY/A.
But life is about to get a lot tougher for him. Up this week? A historically dominant Jaguars pass defense and a Rams defense that ranks 5th in ANY/A. As a writer, you have to get these articles in when you can.
