Prior to the 2018 season, there had never been a week in the NFL where at least 5 games were played and the league as a whole had a passer rating of 97.0. In week 2 of the 2018 season, the league-wide passer rating was 102.6. In week 4, it was 98.2. In week 8, it was 98.0. In week 10, it was 100.9. In week 12 it was 101.2.

In 1973, the highest single-week passer rating was 70.7. In 2018, the lowest single-week passer rating was week 1, at 82.4.
Also interesting is the change in gross passing yards per team game. Here’s the same graph as above, but using passing yards per team game (excluding sack yards lost) as the variable rather than passer rating. You see a huge dip in the ’70s, and even a small dip before the ’04 rules changes, but 2018 was another huge year.
