Previous Passing Stats:

It has been a rough year for California quarterbacks Jared Goff and Aaron Rodgers. Prior to week 13, Goff’s last 16 regular season games had produced just 17 passing touchdowns against 18 interceptions, along with 16 fumbles. Rodgers has had an up-and-down year, and the murmurs are continuing to grow about whether his best days are behind him.

In week 13, however, the two Golden Bears had outstanding games. Goff threw for 424 yards and 2 TDs on 43 passes, with only one sack and no interceptions or fumbles in a blowout win over the Cardinals. It’s probably worth noting that 66% of Goff’s yards came after the catch, as his receivers finished with a whopping 282 YAC on Sunday. As for Rodgers, he threw 4 TDs and didn’t take a sack or throw an interception in a blowout win in the snow against the Giants.

The table below shows the week 13 stats.

The graph below shows, as usual, the passing differential from each game last week. And as usual, the teams that won the passing battle usually won.

The three outliers each have pretty easy explanations, too.

The Chargers won the passing battle but got obliterated in the special teams battle: the Chargers muffed a punt leading to Denver points, missed a key 4th quarter field goal, and lost the game when the Broncos hit a 53-yard field goal as time expired. Denver was only in that position after a controversial pass interference call, too.

In the 49ers/Ravens game, San Francisco actually won the passing efficiency battle, but that’s not the best way to evaluate the Ravens offense. Lamar Jackson rushed for 101 yards and *TEN* first downs on 16 carries, in a 3-point Ravens win. It also didn’t hurt that the 49ers missed a 51-yard field goal as the clock expired in the first half, while the Ravens hit a 49-yard try as the clock expired in the second half to win the game.

Finally, the Seahawks/Vikings Monday Night game featured one of the best passing battles of the week. But the Seahawks also had a dominant day on the ground, rushing for 219 yards and 16 first downs on 42 carries (excluding kneels), a 5.2 YPC average. Minnesota rushed for just four first downs.
