PFR tracks air yards and YAC for quarterbacks, with that data available here. I went ahead and compiled the data at a team level, using quarterback statistics only. The graph below shows how air yards (on the X-Axis) and yards after the catch (on the Y-Axis) for each team so far in 2020.
Regular readers will not be surprised to see that the 49ers gain more YAC per completion than any other team; that is a staple of the Kyle Shanahan offense. Jimmy Garoppolo has averaged an absurd 7.6 yards after the catch per completion this season, and Nick Mullens (6.0) isn’t too far behind. Given how little Washington moves the ball down the field, the Football Team is even more reliant on YAC than the 49ers: both Alex Smith and Dwayne Haskins were averaging 5.8 YAC and just 3.9 air yards per completion. Conversely, Atlanta, Cleveland, the Giants, and Tampa Bay are the most extreme in the other direction, with at least 61% of their passing yards coming through the air rather than after the catch.
The Bucs under Bruce Arians and with Tom Brady were going to be a very interesting test case this year. In 2018 and 2019, Brady averaged 6.0 air yards per completion both seasons as a member of the Patriots; meanwhile, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston averaged 9.1 and 8.5 AY/Cmp in 2018 in Tampa Bay, and Winston was at 8.6 AY/Cmp last year under Arians. This year? The two met in the middle, as Brady has averaged 7.0 air yards per completion.
In Miami, Tua Tagovailoa and Ryan Fitzpatrick have split time; Tagovaioloa has averaged 5.8 air yards and 3.8 YAC per completion, while Fitzpatrick has averaged 6.8 air yards and 4.7 YAC per completion.
What stands out to you?
